Barbados Island

Within the Caribbean island chain, Barbados island is the most easterly island of them. Barbados lies all on it's own surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other.

Made of limestone Barbados island measures only 166 square miles, it reaches 14 miles in width and 21 miles in length. This wonderful tiny island is superbly rich in culture and history. Full of beauty, this is an island of pure paradise!
Barbados island has only one high up incline that goes by the name of Mount Hillaby. Other than that Barbados is reasonably flat. Mount Hillaby has a height of 1,089 feet over sea level.
The Barbados Island weather is fairly stable and in winter very rarely drops underneath 24 degrees C between December and March. In the summer the temperature remains about 30 degrees C or below between May and October. From June to December is the usual time of the hurricane season. It can become very humid and uncomfortable during this time of the year, but fortunately the North Eastern trade winds give the islands a cool gentle breeze for the remaining part.

The official language of Barbados is English spoken with a Barbadian dialect. This can often prove very hard to understand! If you visit Barbados island on a few occasions though you will soon get to grips with 'bare Bajan' talk and they will start to make much more sense.

Barbados island has a population of about 270,000 people. The capital city of Barbados is Bridgetown which is located on the southwest coast. There is plenty to do in Bridgetown from shopping, visiting the fascinating local museums and churches of historic interest. You may even choose to go horse racing!
